Delhi Rain: Air Quality Hits Year's Best; Gurugram Faces Waterlogging Woes – IMD Predicts More Rainfall
Delhi/NCR, September 14, 2024 – The capital city of Delhi woke up to fresh showers this morning, bringing much-needed respite from the usual dust and pollution. The city's air quality improved significantly, marking its best reading of the year so far. However, while Delhi residents welcomed the rain, neighboring Gurugram continued to face the brunt of waterlogging.
Air Quality Improvement in Delhi
As rain showers swept across the capital, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) saw a remarkable improvement. The rains helped settle airborne dust and pollutants, contributing to the cleanest air Delhi has experienced in 2024. The AQI levels in several parts of the city dropped to "good" and "satisfactory" categories, a rare achievement for a city often grappling with severe air pollution.
Experts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) say the drop in pollution levels is directly attributed to the rains. The IMD has issued an advisory suggesting that the air quality is likely to remain satisfactory as long as the wet spell continues.
Waterlogging Woes Continue in Gurugram
While the rain brought relief to Delhi’s air quality, Gurugram is still dealing with the aftermath of heavy downpours over the past few days. Waterlogged roads, traffic snarls, and flooding in low-lying areas have become a common sight, disrupting daily life.
Several areas, including Cyber City and Golf Course Road, reported severe waterlogging, causing massive traffic jams during peak hours. Local authorities are working round-the-clock to drain water from the affected areas, but the situation remains challenging. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of infrastructure to handle monsoon showers despite years of similar issues.
IMD Predicts More Rainfall
According to the latest forecast from the IMD, both Delhi and the NCR region, including Gurugram, can expect more rainfall over the next 24-48 hours. The rain is expected to be moderate but could intensify in certain pockets, which may lead to further waterlogging and traffic disruptions in Gurugram.
Despite the challenges, the IMD's prediction of continued rain spells hope for an extended period of improved air quality in Delhi. The authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions and stay updated on weather alerts.
